Airport, a non-place?
Project Synopsis
This journey to the airport was taken to explore a place, a place which has been claimed to be a non-place by Marc Augé in non-places introduction to anthropology of super modernity 1985.
According to Marc Augé, the definition of a non-place can be the following
Non-places are spaces of transport and transit that are lacking any historical significance and strong symbolism. If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place P.77 Marc Augé in non-places introduction to anthropology of super modernity 1985
I have hence decided to research this view of Marc Augé from my perspective to explore any possibility of a conflict. By spending time in a claimed non-place such as an airport I thought I will get to know if a thing such as non-place exists.
For the sake of convincing myself that I am not being influenced by an established author, I decided to ask myself a few questions regarding non-places in relation to the airport.
Do people feel different when they enter an airport?
Do people remember the time spent in the airport?
Can people convert a non-place into a place?
Through my observational research, I have concluded non-places exist everywhere and an airport is one of the most relevant ones. Without the people in it, the airport is nothing but a big hollow space. Geometric locations such as streets, parks, stations and airports need life to make them the place they are assumed as.
